These two books, both scholarly in intent, could hardly differ more from dahlhauz another: Dahlhaus has a Glossary the headings include “a cappella,” “aria,” “atonality,” “bel canto,” “cadence,” and “NeapoUtan sixth” the headnote to which states, with arrestingly and unintentionally ironical misdirection, that the definitions “are limited to matters which the reader needs to know in order to understand this book” Dahlhaus organizes his book around “watershed” years—for example,the year of the July Revolution in France, and around which coalesce the “demise of the age of art” proclaimed by Heine, the musical consequences of the deaths of Beethoven and Schubert, the simultaneous and dramatic appearance of Chopin and Liszt, Berlioz and Meyerbeer, and Schumann and Mendelssohn.
